MDZS follows the tale of several complicatedly interrelated sects of cultivators (fantasy ancient China wizards) in Fantasy Ancient China. The story encompasses complex themes such as politics, love, intrigue, necromancy, not being able to handle your liquor, extremely bad coping decisions, being a dumb asshole, threatening to fuck your boyfriend while doing a handstand, having great women characters and then bussing them, and "they're trying so hard? why are they so bad at this? why are they. wh"
The story begins by informing you that the titular Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian, has died! A lot of the current day plot leads from that circumstance, and a lot of the flashback plot builds to it happening. In this AU of events, each of two versions of Wei Wuxian and his deuteragonist (/♥LOVE INTEREST♥) Lan Wangji were offered wishes at two different timepoints in their canon: one after the dust had settled 14 years later, and one immediately after the main event. How they decided to try to fix what had gone wrong there was up to their mental state at the time.
What mission the wish-granting force wants from them return for this favor is still unclear, but it let them know they'd be traveling to new worlds to figure it out, and they'd better keep their goals in mind! After some ill-defined time in a tutorial world that bore a suspicious aesthetic similarity to aprincessdormant_online (RIP) to learn how questing works when you understand what the object is, they were kicked to another world... it was supposed to be Sidereal, right? No one's saying anything, so we can only hope.
Lan Wangji left his canon world mostly to pursue the version of Wei Wuxian he's married to, who was a lot more tempted by possibilities of wish-chasing than he was! Lan Wangji's wish, "to find a method to protect Wei Wuxian from demonic cultivation," is the one with the lowest stakes between the four of them, because his primary wish (revive Wei Wuxian) had already come true, and he had like ten seconds to come up with a new one at the time. |

15 Second Summary |
Lan Wangji is the second heir to the Lan Sect, one known for its endless myriad of rules. He is righteous, serious and straightlaced, devoted to the rules and duties he’s folded into his life philosophies. However, he’s also incredibly loyal, and will bend and break those rules as far as he’s personally able to save a loved one. He also feels deeply and fiercely under that cold exterior, and has a healthy if dry sense of humor. He’s just bad at showing all but the seriousness externally, so it's a trial to learn to properly read him.
He has wild communication issues, including: inability to blatantly convey most emotions facially or verbally; a tendency to make what he does emote come off as cool indifference, mysterious placidity, or annoyance; a belief in actions over words; and either Not Knowing What To Say And Freezing, or Thinking He’s Said It, Except He Used Two Totally Ambiguous Words, Actually. This makes him come off as unflappably calm, dependable and commanding, or a stick-in-the-mud no-fun-allowed stoneface, depending how much you like him.
He's had thirteen years to live with grief, lose all his fucks and utterly solidify his calm, and also miraculously get together with the boy of his dreams, so now he’s incredibly chill. |
Abilities & Permissions |
Abilities |
Cultivators are trained in fighting, especially with their spiritual swords. Lan Wangji is very good at hand-to-hand and sword combat, can control his sword Bichen to move independently of him, and can use a number of spells and talismans. The guqin (zither) he carries is also a spiritual/combat tool; he specializes in musical techniques to exorcise, suppress, fight and communicate with spirits and undead. Some of these techniques can also be used on living people if needed.
His arm strength is also comedically enormous. |

Sensing |
Lan Wangji's supernatural abilities are powered by energy derived directly from the core of his soul! It pings as very cool and clean and pure. There's also a lot of it; he's a spiritual tank.
Smells like cold sandalwood.
His soul is the exact same as strikingchords' as well, just older. |
