[after Yi City and the second time Wei Wuxian gets Lan Wangji drunk, it takes about a day for them to reach the Garden of Annual blossoms. this curious incident takes place in the space of that day.

outside of appeasing the corpse pieces they've been collecting each night, it's not uncommon for Lan Wangji to take the time to practice on the guqin. he doesn't play entire songs, since he's not trying to interact with any spirits at the moment, but safely broken-up sections of Inquiry and Empathy (was Empathy always a musical technique? it is in this timeline, shut up) and the other songs he uses for battle hum through the walls of the rest stop they've paused at on the road.

it's partway through a passage of Empathy that there's a notable shriek of strings, and then silence; when Wei Wuxian goes to check, he'll find Lan Wangji half-collapsed over the instrument, his breathing harsh and a strange fluctuation of energy around him.

[self-regulation only goes so far; his hips rise slightly off the bed, before he forces them down again. finally manages, hoarse and clearly at the end of his rope:]

[he hums again and gives his head a shake; he very clearly has no intention of stopping, and even picks up the speed again once he's made it clear that he's going to keep going]

[Lan Wangji's control cracks at the sight, at the feeling, at Wei Wuxian's terrible incorrigible unrelenting unstoppable mouth being used to this purpose. it isn't quite broken; he doesn't start just thrusting wildly. but he isn't able to keep still anymore, body starting to press up in slow firm increments, a hand skating up Wei Wuxian's face before tangling with trembling care into his hair, just holding his head instead of forcing it down]

[he almost stops then, when he feels fingers slide into his hair. it's tempting to pull himself back and offer some commentary, to pretend to chide him over not being able to keep his hands to himself. the thought passes as quickly as it comes, though, and he only stutters his pace to make a pleased noise somewhere in the back of his throat as he leans into the touch]

[like you wouldn’t be grabbing at him immediately if the situations were reversed, Wei Ying!!!

Lan Wangji lets out a little growl in response to that noise, hips rising into the pressure again; doesn’t stop himself this time, though it’s an easy enough pace that Wei Wuxian can adjust. the pulse of desire in the room is red-hot, now, a strange contrast to how relatively calm he’s still acting; he’s very close to the edge.]
